801 “801 Live” 2xLP reissue (Expression UK)

801 live (Eno and Manzanera)YOU DON’T REISSUE THIS ALBUM ON VINYL AND LEAVE “RONGWRONG” OFF. YOU JUST DON’T.

Other than that, it’s okay. There’s some surface noise on my copy, damnit, and although the remastering is mostly pleasing, Simon Phillips’ cymbals are still too sibilant. Who can I talk to about this? And I never needed to hear “Baby’s On Fire” or “You Really Got Me” again. On the plus side, “East of Asteroid”‘s improvisational bass/drum flights are more impressive than ever. The liner notes are good, notwithstanding Eno’s “I don’t remember this era at all” contribution.

The rehearsal tapes give good perspective (especially the Eno stuff– the extended intro to “TNK,” natch). There’s also an insanely good version of one of my favorite songs ever, “Diamond Head.”

If you’re loving this sort of prog retro, get the CD version that comes with a slipcased book; it’s worth it.

But YOU DON’T REISSUE THIS ALBUM ON VINYL AND LEAVE “RONGWRONG” OFF. Got it?

I can only find reliable sale copies of this one on Amazon, sorry. You can also try Discogs.
